VUB researcher Mahyar Firouzi is studying brain stimulation as part of his doctoral research in neuropsychology and neurorehabilitation to improve the automaticity of movements in people with Parkinson's disease.

Seemingly simple actions such as getting out of bed in the morning are in reality complex motor actions, which we perform without thinking, on autopilot. In patients with Parkinson's disease this automatic action is disturbed. Something goes wrong in the brain so that they suddenly have to think about every action. Mahyar is investigating whether brain stimulation can help to improve automotor activity in Parkinson's patients.
